Sorry, this event has sold out

Join us at Quarterhouse on Friday 3 September at 6.30pm for a celebration of artist Jyll Bradley and the world premiere of her film, M.R (2021).

After pre-screening drinks in the foyer with Jyll, we'll start the celebration with two short films:

New York Counterpoint (music by Steve Reich) and
Woman Holding a Balance

We'll also host 'Jyll Bradley in Conversation with Lewis Biggs' — a discussion between the artist and Folkestone Triennial curator, Lewis Biggs. We'll finish with the world premiere of M.R., Jyll's new film.

In 1960’s Britain, over 160,000 children were ‘given up’ for adoption at birth through a closed system which denied them any legal right to their identity until adulthood. Jyll Bradley was one of those children. Her new film 'M.R.' is a tender coming-of-age-story exploring the subject of childhood adoption, creativity and identity.

The story of 'M.R.' is told through Green/Light for (M.R), Bradley's Folkestone Triennial 2014 work which marked her return to Folkestone, where she was born. The film is the story of an artist in search of her creative origins and a language to express the trauma, displacement and invisibility of the adoptee. M.R. asks universal questions about why we make art and how art, in turn, makes us.

This film, supported by Arts Council England, is a tender coming of age story exploring the subject of childhood adoption, creativity and identity. Please note M.R. is (suitable for the over 12s, there is some swearing and discussion of mental health issues)
