Dan Evans, Vicky Spratt & Yvonne Singh: Class, Power and the Rise of the Far Right

Sorry, this event has sold out

Explore the intersections of class, power, and the resurgence of the far right in the UK with three acclaimed authors: Dan Evans, Vicky Spratt and Yvonne Singh. This event promises to be an illuminating exploration of the socio-political forces shaping our world today.

Dan Evans, author of Nation of Shopkeepers, unpacks the cultural and economic factors driving the resurgence of the petite-bourgeoisie — a class precariously situated between the working and upper-middle classes. Historically, this group has been the base for various political movements, from the Nazi Party to Marxist and anarchist factions. Dan examines how the petite-bourgeoisie continues to play a pivotal role in the shifting political landscape of contemporary Britain.

Vicky Spratt, a journalist and author of Tenants, analyses the rise of homeownership and small landlordism under Thatcher, which significantly contributed to the growth of the petite-bourgeoisie and the ongoing housing crisis in the UK. Her research provides a critical look at the economic policies that have shaped housing insecurity and its implications for society.

Chaired by Yvonne Singh, a Faversham-based journalist and writer. She highlights the historical connection between race, class and the media's role in both perpetuating and challenging the status quo in her forthcoming book, INK! From the Age of Empire to Black Power.

Together, these authors will delve into how economic inequality, housing insecurity, and the legacy of colonialism have fostered the racist violence witnessed in the UK this year. They will discuss the challenges and opportunities for resistance, examining pathways toward building a more equitable society by addressing the root causes of these growing threats.

Don’t miss the chance to hear insights from these influential voices as they explore the intricate web of class, race, and power.
