Join us for a fun and fast-paced celebration of Folkestone’s vibrant literary talent at the Folkestone Authors Showcase. This is your chance to discover the work of 15 local authors as they each take to the stage for a quickfire, three-minute presentation of their books. Expect a lively atmosphere as we use a quirky timer to keep things moving!

After the presentations, you’ll have the chance to meet the authors, get your books signed, and enjoy a drink from the bar.

Jean Baker
Dr Jean Baker, a former journalist with a PhD from the University of Kent, explores the fascinating world of 18th and 19th-century provincial theatre. Her book, Sarah Baker and her Kentish Theatres, unearths forgotten stories of the era’s bold women, celebrated as the Society for Theatre Research’s annual publication.

Leigh Chambers
Inspired by the mysterious Cottingley Fairies, Leigh Chambers’s novel Alice & Iris delves into the real-life intrigue behind the famous fairy photographs that captivated the world. Shortlisted for the Bath Novel Award, this evocative story will be published by Neem Tree Press in April 2026.

Hannah Cross
Dr Hannah Cross, an International Relations lecturer at the University of Westminster, has spent 15 years researching West Africa-Europe migration. Her acclaimed book, Migration Beyond Capitalism, invites readers to envision a fairer world, making it “essential reading for those seeking to build a better future”.

Vicky Davis
Historian and author Vicky Davis brings a unique blend of science, languages, and Russian Studies to her work. With extensive travel across the former Soviet Union, she advocates for women’s rights in Central Asia and offers compelling insights in Central Asia in World War Two: The Impact and Legacy of Fighting for the Soviet Union.

Debby Jones
In Dateline Haifa, written under the pen name D A Kent, Debby Jones plunges readers into a gripping 1948 espionage tale. Following two private investigators from London to Haifa, her novel, published by Wealden Strand, captures the tense intrigue of post-war Europe with cinematic flair.

Daryna Kucheruk
Daryna Kucheruk, a former TV news reporter from Ukraine with a Master’s in Journalism, now freelances for outlets including the BBC. Known for her novels Strangers and Recall Yourself, Daryna recently found fresh inspiration in children’s literature. Her new book, Silkie the Seal, offers a heartwarming tale of friendship and overcoming loneliness.

Donna McLean
Writer and activist Donna McLean, a mum of twins from Ayrshire, began her literary journey in Folkestone after a long career in mental health. Her memoir, Small Town Girl: Love, Lies and the Undercover Police, is an account of a serious relationship built on a monumental lie, which shines a light into police abuse of power — boosted by Penguin Random House’s prestigious WriteNow mentorship.

Jon Matthews
Known for his sharp wit, comedian and writer Jon Matthews crafts horror with a humorous twist. His debut novella, The Monksford Incident, pays homage to HP Lovecraft, following an archaeologist who uncovers a chilling secret in his sleepy hometown — an addictive blend of suspense, dark humour, and the supernatural.

Vanessa Nitsche
Vanessa Nitsche’s Cocoa the Cat tells a warm, uplifting tale of friendship between a lonely woman and a stray cat, celebrated as “honest, self-deprecating, and charming” (Online Reviewer). Winner of the Cat Writers Association Certificate of Excellence, Vanessa's book resonates with animal lovers of all ages.

David Hunter Pybus
Scientist-historian David Hunter Pybus, a former Dragons’ Den star with "Scents of Time," shares his fascination for historical mysteries. His latest book, What’s in a Name? The True Identity of William Shakespeare, offers a thrilling investigation, following his earlier bestseller, The True Identity of Jack the Ripper.

Paul Robinson
After a distinguished career in education, Paul Robinson found a new calling in children’s literature. Harry Stone
Dr Harry Stone, a retired paediatrician and NHS veteran, brings his deep insights into medical education and healthcare into his writing, in his book Trust me I'm Exhausted: How Not to Train a Doctor. An advocate for critical thinking and clinical reasoning, Harry also explores his creative side with painting.

Rachel Gristock
Rachel Gristock, a mum of two and proud Welsh transplant in Folkestone, brings her signature humour to Mrs Wee & Mr Poo, a fun, informative book about potty training. With warmth and wit, her story delights children and adults alike, turning a tricky topic into a family favourite.
