Sorry, this event has sold out
Experience a captivating morning at the Folkestone Documentary Festival, where you’ll explore the depths of autism through two thought-provoking films. The event features a main documentary alongside a short film, followed by a Q&A session with the filmmakers.
Autism Plays Itself (UK)
Director: Janet Harbord | 12a | 18 mins
This 1957 film, shot at the Maudsley Hospital, captures children under observation for atypical behaviour. In a contemporary twist, three autistic respondents revisit the footage, offering fresh interpretations of the children's actions, celebrating the nuances of autistic body language.
The Stimming Pool (UK)
Directors: Sam Chown-Ahern, Georgia Bradburn, Benjamin Brown, Robin Elliott-Knowles, Lucy Walker, Steven Eastwood | PG | 70 mins | Followed by Q&A
An imaginative and experimental piece co-created by a collective of autistic artists from Hastings, this film invites viewers into a neurodiverse experience, challenging conventional perceptions of reality with a touch of fantasy.
This is a relaxed screening where you are encouraged to make yourself comfortable. Lights will be dimmed, sound levels lowered, and movement is welcome. Feel free to stim, make noise, or come and go as you please. Awkwardness is embraced here.
