Joe Shute & Jonathan Hollins: The Wild Side
Book this event online or email the box office at boxoffice@creativefolkestone.org.uk
This event promises an incredible glimpse into the hidden worlds of animals and the passion required to protect them, as two celebrated voices in conservation and nature writing come together for an unmissable evening.
Meet Jonathan Hollins, a vet known for his pioneering work in the South Atlantic islands, where he cares for a unique set of animal patients — including the world’s oldest living land animal, Jonathan the Giant Tortoise. Jonathan’s work on the remote British Overseas Territories places him at the heart of some of the world’s most vital wildlife efforts, and he brings rare stories from this fascinating and fragile ecosystem. His experiences as the “Vet at the End of the Earth” offer an up-close look at conservation in one of the world’s most extreme environments, illuminating the beauty and urgency of his work.
Joining Jonathan is acclaimed Telegraph journalist and nature writer Joe Shute, author of Stowaway: The Disreputable Exploits of the Rat. With humour and insight, Joe delves into the misunderstood lives of rats, revealing how these often-despised creatures have lessons to teach about resilience, survival and adaptability. Joe’s work shines a light on the complex interplay between humans and the natural world, blending his fascination with wildlife with his expertise in storytelling.
This event will be chaired by Ben Cottam, a writer known for the BBC Radio 4 sitcom Plum House, starring Simon Callow and Jane Horrocks. His original play The Receiver of Wreck and BBC Radio 3 documentaries, Cave Life for Beginners and Walking the Causeways, showcase his unique approach to storytelling, where he explores wild, rugged settings and the hidden depths of human and animal resilience. Though based in Kent, Ben’s work draws on his roots in the north-west of England, especially the landscapes of the Fylde coast.
Together, Ben, Jonathan and Joe offer a thought-provoking exploration of the challenges facing conservation today, from managing isolated ecosystems to understanding the roles of creatures often considered pests. Through their engaging stories and firsthand experiences, you’ll gain a new perspective on the marvels and mysteries of the animal kingdom — and why protecting it matters.
Perfect for nature lovers, conservation enthusiasts and anyone curious about the natural world, this event is a rare chance to see two passionate experts share their unique views on animals and adventure. Don’t miss out on this captivating evening of storytelling and discovery.
