Join us for an inspiring evening with Maria Balshaw, director of the Tate and author of Gathering of Strangers: Why Museums Matter, alongside the dynamic Ramsgate-based artist Bob and Roberta Smith, known for his iconic FOLKESTONE IS AN ART SCHOOL. Together, they will explore the profound impact and legacy of art, the vital role of artists in society, and the importance of preserving our artistic heritage.
Maria Balshaw has been at the helm of the Tate since 2017, leading the institution through a period of significant growth and transformation. In her new book, Gathering of Strangers, she offers illuminating insights into how museums and libraries serve as vital spaces for community gathering, historical reflection and artistic innovation. Under her visionary leadership, the Tate has expanded its reach, embracing diverse and inclusive narratives that resonate with a broader audience.
Bob and Roberta Smith, celebrated for his vibrant text-based artworks and passionate advocacy for the arts, will bring his unique perspective to this discussion. Known for blurring the lines between art and activism, Smith is a powerful voice in the ongoing conversation about the role of museums as catalysts for social change. His contributions will highlight the intersection of art, education, and activism, emphasising how artistic expression can provoke thought and inspire action within communities.
In today’s world, museums have evolved beyond mere repositories of art; they are dynamic spaces for dialogue, education, and community engagement. This event promises to delve into the transformative power of museums and their essential contributions to cultural heritage, societal change, and artistic expression.
