Is Shakespeare’s work really as prescient as it seems? And can it help us in these turbulent times? For Autumn Reads Robert McCrum explores these questions and more.
Robert McCrum’s new book, Shakespearean: On Life & Language In Times of Disruption, is an enthralling exploration of Shakespeare himself and how and why he remains so central to our lives today. McCrum sets out to explore the playwright’s endless relevance in our lives. As he does so he paints a vivid and rich portrait of Shakespeare the man, his role in performing arts and the development of language as well as his enduring presence in politics, culture, identity, power, race and sexuality.
For nearly 20 years Robert McCrum was editor-in-chief of the publishers Faber & Faber, and then literary editor of the Observer from 1996 to 2008. He is now an associate editor of The Observer. He is the author of My Year Off: Rediscovering Life After a Stroke, Wodehouse: A Life, six novels, and the co-author of the international bestseller, The Story of English.
'Wonderful . . . compulsively readable.’ Nicholas Hytner on Shakespearean.
