The prevalence of chalk on the Kent Downs suggested a way of working, creating a drawing inspired by local ancient chalk landmarks which often have ritualistic or commemorative purposes.
This temporary contemporary response to the site draws the viewer in to discover and contemplate the landscape, its dramatic views, landforms, and its geological significance and rich biodiversity.
Through physically exploring the work’s connection to site, visitors will be visually directed through the drawing’s orientation in the landscape to the sister chalklands across The Channel in France.
Geology knows no borders.
The work will fade away, existing only in its documentation and the memory of the viewer drawing attention to the fact that all is ultimately temporary in the land and subject to constant change.
Hucking Estate is run by The Woodland Trust and is located around the village of Hucking, with Hollingbourne just over two miles to the south and the centre of Maidstone approximately 9.5 miles away in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The Estate runs to the escarpment of the North Downs along the southern boundary, which on a clear day affords fantastic views across the Weald of Kent.
