For the duration of this year’s Festival, the newly-opened The Folkestone Bookshop is transformed into Ulysses & Co: Banned Books, a shop devoted to 499 books that have been banned in different parts of the world at one time or another.
499 is the number of copies of James Joyce’s novel, Ulysses, (published in 1922) that were impounded in Folkestone and subsequently burned for obscenity. The shop is opposite Quarterhouse on Tontine Street so come visit during the festival and be surprised, perhaps even astonished, at some of the books against which action has been taken across the ages.
The Folkestone Bookshop will be curating a programme of events to happen in the shop during the festival.
Venue: The Folkestone Bookshop, 70-72 Tontine Street, Folkestone, CT20 1JP
